Best Graphics (WI) have secured a Smart-binder SB 2 Saddle Stitcher order from a large, Direct Mail-Commerail Printer in the state of California. The unit will be run “near line” behind a Hunkeler unwinder, sheeter, and the first-of-its-kind California-based HP PageWide web press.

Taking rolls, printed on a HP PageWide T240 digital web press, the Hunkeler unwinder will feed a continuous roll of paper into the Hunkeler sheeter, which separates the paper into individual, 4-page signatures before arrival into the Ibis Smart-binder 2. Use of the Hewlett Packard PageWide digital press allows for variable data to be applied to each 4-page signature as needed, ultimately customizing each booklet stitched.

Printed on each individual 4-page signature is a 2D, a 3 to 9, or comparable barcode that is read by cameras, which reverts back to the Ibis’ central hub, ultimately ensuring 100% accurate production. When the appropriate amount of 4-pagers required for one personalized booklet is complete, the collated set is released, a cover is matched, and the booklet is saddle stitched and trimmed. Again, every booklet is unique: each page can retain unique data that is highly personalized and be variable in page count from the booklet produced before, or after it!

This Ibis Smart-binder 2 installed in California utilizes Hohner stitch heads for booklet-making, and is prepared for future upgrades to accept our patented, spine gluing technology (SB 3). This style of booklet making is preferred by direct mail, and mail house operations that frequently insert the piece alongside other collated material. Existing Smart-binder 3 users, with the patented spine glue capabilities, suggest these booklets lay flatter, and insert more easily than stitched booklets, which have more “pillow” in them.
